Israel – Day 3 : Banias Falls/Metula

We got an early start the next day for our first of three major hikes in Israel, Banias Falls. By all accounts it was the easiest of the three we would do and took us a fraction of the time it was supposed to. That said, it was a really pretty hike.

After the hike we jumped back in the car and headed straight to Metula to see ‘The Good Fence’. Metula is the northernmost city in Israel and is basically in Lebanon.  In fact, as you drive up the main highway to get to the town, there’s a barbed wire fence with watchtowers that could, need be, cut the rest of the country off from invading Lebanese (to the detriment of Metula’s residents).  Despite its location,  Metula was a pretty standard looking suburb, Liz actually compared it to Boca Raton and honestly she wasn’t far off.  Unable to find what all the Metuala-hype was about (Peter had added it to our itinerary) we went to the town’s massive sports complex to check out the home of the Israeli national hockey team (yes really, Israel has a ice hockey team). We then saw that the gym had a shooting range, and thought it a strangely symbolic place to get in some target practice.

Liz’s first shot was (I sh*t you not) a bullseye

This lovely day finished with a wonderful al fresco dinner near the Kibbutz with assorted wildlife.

Hey Liz, my back right tooth hurts a little bit. Weird.

Israel – Day 2 : Akko, Rosh Hanikra, Tsfat

Early start Saturday morning… We had to get thru the fort city of Acre (Akko), the grotto at Rosh Hanikra, the ‘mystic’ city of Tsfat before finally getting to El Hagoshrim Kibbutz were we get to spend 2 nights.

Akko was amazing and after a false start (going in the wrong entrance without tickets) we got ourselves situated and were able to really explore the ruins.

Liz was a little scared in the tunnels.

After Akko, we went to Rosh Hanikra where legend has it some woman threw herself into the ocean to escape someone evil… I think I’ve heard this story before. But the grottos were amazing and the cable car had its expected effect on Liz.

Steepest cable car in Israel.

Our last stop before making it to the Hagoshrim Kibbutz for some needed rest is Tsfat. An artistic, mystical community (highly recommended by my sister). It was a pretty place to walk around for awhile but I think we were happy to get to our final destination after a long day.

Israel – Day 1 : Caeserea/Haifa

4 hours on the tarmac, a 12 hour flight, another hour in the car and we finally made it to the first destination of our Israel Teen Tour ’94 on Shabbat, June 28, 2008.

Unfortunately we are only able to spend few hours in Caeserea before we have to get back in the car and let Steve direct us to Haifa (Steve is our guide/American GPS voice).

The aqueducts are amazing. Those Romans sure knew how to build them.

cimg2436
Liz was pretty thirsty

We got to Haifa in the early evening and I didn’t realize it but on the Sabbath one of the elevators in the hotel runs on auto so you can get in and out on any floor without doing any ‘work’.  (Liz apparently (and smugly) already knew this).

Haifa is a beautiful city overlooking the water.

I wish we had more than a night to see the city but we are off tomorrow early to head to Acre, Rosh Hanikra, Tsfat and then we’ll end the day at El Hagoshrim Kibbutz in The Golan Heights (our first FULL busy day.)

Israel and Greece – June ’08

Summer ’08 and Liz and I are off to Israel and Greece for two weeks.

Israel is the first stop and we will be spending 10 days there before we head to Greece for a half day in Athens before we head to Santorini.

I’ve never been to Israel before and liz has never been to Greece so this trip has something for everyone.

Again you can find the pictures via this link on the Archive page.

Hopefully will have the posts from the trip up soon as well.

Vail – Feb. ’08

I’ve created a monster.

Only her third year on ski’s and Liz is already ready to tackle the back bowls of Vail. We are heading off to visit Jill in Denver, before a week of skiing at Vail.

The posts are coming but for now you can see our pictures on this link on the Archive page.

On top of all the great skiing (we had sunshine and powder the entire week) I:
1) left my credit card at the bar (it was used for late night pizzas) and had AMEX express me a replacement which took an extra day because of a blizzard in the mountains.
2) nearly killed myself on a traverse practicing edging. I went over the side of the traverse and nearly fell 20 ft into the stream at the bottom of blue sky basin. i was able to get my arms back over the top of the traverse but the instructor had to send patrol back to pull me out. I was stuck over the side for about 15 minutes after all the lifts were closed and was scared s-less. I could not get out on my own. RIDICULOUS!
3) was taken out my a 100 and nothing pound woman. i hit the ground so hard i tore my rotator cuff.

Other than that Liz is a pro now and we had a great time!

Maine – 8/13/06

I can’t beleive its been a year since we have been engaged and less that a month until we get married!

We are back in Maine for a week of golf, waterskiing and island time.

The past year (since we were engaged) has been interesting. One thing I learned about Liz is that she likes camping. I never had her pegged for an outdoorswoman but evidently she is.

Anyway, I borrowed a tent from one of the guys at work (thanks Demian) and we are off to Acadia on Mount Dessert Island for a few nights of camping… Who knows maybe this is the start of something fun.

Pix and details to come…

India – Day 15-19 : The Maldives

Not too much to talk about in the Maldives. We are staying at the Four Seasons at Kuda Haru. Not much to do here but to drink, get massages, eat, sit by the pool, drink and snorkel. I also tried waterskiing but the water was too rough.

Of course Liz waited till we were in our luxurious room on stilts in the water to succumb to the same stomach ailment I had in Goa. Except instead of suffering for a little under 2 days like I did, she suffered for a full 4. Poor baby.

Still we made our best of it by enjoying the beauty of the island, the excellent food and doing our best to enjoy the start of our lives together and what will hopefully be the first of many wonderful and amazing trips.

I love you Lizzie.

India – Day 14 : Mumbai

Mumbai really is the Hollywood of India. It feels prosperous and poor both at the same time. Film dominates the city and it is small compared to the other sprawling cities we visited. We walked basically across the city proper in a day.

We stayed in the extremely beautiful Taj Mahal Palace and Towers. Thank you mom and dad for helping us get the upgrade to a beautiful room in the old Palace part of the hotel. We will post as many pictures as we can of the hotel and our time in Mumbai.
